Head west to the golden coast of California where you can dive headlong into charismatic San Francisco and trendy Los Angeles; beginning at the coast, take the breezy palms to pines highway bypass and rub shoulders with the rich and famous at tranquil Palm Springs.

Traverse the western states’ incredible National Parks, like Yosemite, where waterfalls tumble over ancient rocks and forests slope towards the sunset, and Redwood National Parks, where mist-shrouded thousand-year-old trees stretch up as far as the eye can see. Travel further inland to explore the rust-red deserts of Monument Valley and the striking glory of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, where you can walk in the footsteps of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. Meanwhile, skiers and snowboards will encounter a surprising haven during winter and spring with the snowy slopes of Colorado and Nevada.

Head north from Colorado and enter the glorious plains of South Dakota, where rugged, golden grassland leads to the Black Hills where legendary Mount Rushmore is located - here you can gaze upon the incredible sculptures of the four presidents, before travelling to the largely unspoiled Deadwood, ‘the wildest of Wild West towns’ and walk in the footsteps of Calamity Jane.

Time your holiday to arrive in autumn and be dazzled by the spectacular fall colours in New England as you travel through the picturesque landscapes of Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, where you’ll also find a wealth of European influences in terms of architecture and lifestyle. Embrace New York City in all its glory, where you can rub shoulders with cultures from every continent and taste delicacies borne from a melting pot of cuisines. Alternatively, head to the Great White North and explore the myriad sights that Canada has to offer: from the bustling cities of Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto to the astonishing ruggedness of the Rocky Mountains, lakes and glaciers. Burger And A Beer United States

Food & Drink in North America

From shrimp and grits to sushi and tacos, North America is home to a wonderfully diverse array of cuisines. Being home to so many different cultures, and with influences ranging from indigenous Native Americans to British and Spanish, the continent offers the chance to try traditional dishes shaped by its diverse make-up.

Whichever part of the continent you are visiting, holidays in North America are the stuff of dreams for those keen to try new flavours and dishes. The cuisine here varies from region to region, with each having its own delicacies based on the local cultures and geography. If you're visiting Boston, Newport, or other destinations in New England, you'll find menus with influences from England, Native Americans, Italy and Portugal. Popular dishes include Clam Cakes and Chowder, pot roast and lobster rolls.

Poutine In Canada

Take a trip to America's Deep South, and you'll find hearty, flavourful dishes such as pulled pork, barbecue, gumbo and jambalaya, as well as irresistible desserts like pecan pie, bread pudding and peach cobbler. In the West, wild game and fish still play a big part in the cuisine, and in California, Mexican and Asian influences can be seen in delicious offerings like burritos, tacos, sushi and Asian chicken salad.

If you are planning a visit to Alaska, you can try ubiquitous delicacies such as fish and chips, salmon, king crab and berry cobbler. There are also a number of traditional dishes that adventurous travellers may like to try, such as reindeer sausage, jellied moose noose and muktuk – an Inuit dish made using whale blubber and skin. In Canada, traditional Indigenous dishes such as barley stew and maple taffy are still enjoyed, alongside dishes borne from other cultures, such as the Chinese-influenced ginger beef. The country's most famous dish, however, is poutine – fries topped with cheese and gravy.
